TLDR The engineered yeast strain BLYAS can quickly and sensitively detect androgenic chemicals.
The study introduced Saccharomyces cerevisiae BLYAS, a novel bioluminescent bioreporter for detecting androgenic compounds. This genetically engineered yeast strain produced a bioluminescent signal in response to androgenic substances, showing high sensitivity with detection limits of 2.5 × 10⁻⁹ M for dihydrotestosterone and 2.5 × 10⁻¹⁰ M for testosterone. The bioreporter demonstrated rapid response times of 3-4 hours and was suitable for high-throughput screening and environmental monitoring. The strain with four androgen response elements showed the highest luminescence, and preliminary tests in environmental water samples indicated similar detection limits to laboratory conditions, highlighting its potential for environmental applications.
