TLDR Many people with hair loss had low iron and ferritin levels.
In a 2019 retrospective study involving 213 patients diagnosed with Telogen Effluvium (TE), a common cause of hair loss, it was found that 54% of patients had ferritin deficiency, 42% had iron deficiency, and 1% had B12 deficiency. Anemia was present in 16% of the patients, primarily due to iron deficiency. Elevated thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) was found in 4% of the patients and low T4 in 1%. No patients had low folate levels, but it was high in 5% of the patients. The study concluded that hair loss may be associated with low serum iron and ferritin, and emphasized the importance of investigating iron deficiency anemia, controlling thyroid function tests, and checking vitamin values in patients presenting with diffuse hair loss.
