Comparison of the Response of Secondary Hair Follicles of Cashmere and Angora Goats to Prolactin and Melatonin In Vitro

    TLDR Prolactin and melatonin affect the growth of Angora and Cashmere goat hair differently.
    The study investigated the effects of prolactin and melatonin on the growth patterns of secondary hair follicles from Angora and Cashmere goats in vitro. Angora goats have a single fleece of Mohair with a fiber diameter of 22 to 45 μm, while Cashmere goats have a double coat with fine cashmere underhair of 19 μm diameter or less. The growth of Angora goat fibers is nearly continuous, whereas Cashmere hair follicle activity is largely influenced by seasonal changes. The study aimed to understand how these hormones, which are involved in the photoperiodic response, affect hair follicle growth in these two types of goats.
