TLDR Radiation cystitis patients need better monitoring and early treatment due to higher readmission rates.
A retrospective analysis of 144 acute haematuria admissions at Christchurch Hospital from November 2021 to January 2023 found that 22 (15.3%) were due to radiation cystitis. Management strategies, including transfusion requirements, anti-bleeding medication usage, and surgery needs, were similar between radiation cystitis and non-radiation cystitis patients. The average hospital stay was also comparable (3.7 days for radiation cystitis vs. 3.5 days for non-radiation cystitis). However, radiation cystitis patients had a significantly higher readmission rate (59.1% vs. 25.4%). The study highlights the need for rigorous monitoring and improved early interventions for radiation cystitis patients.
