TLDR Methotrexate side effects vary by race and sex.
The study reviewed 97 patients treated with methotrexate for uveitis at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and found that side effects varied by race and sex. Males experienced more gastrointestinal upset than females (24% vs. 13.8%), and Caucasians had more gastrointestinal complaints (20% vs. 8%) compared to African Americans, who experienced more hair loss (14% vs. 6.6%). Although the sample size was small, the findings suggested potential racial and gender disparities in methotrexate side effects, which could help clinicians better counsel patients on their risk profiles.
