TLDR Methotrexate treatment often causes hair loss.
The study conducted by Adriana Łukasik et al., published on Feb 28, 2019, aimed to evaluate if methotrexate used in immunomodulatory doses could cause increased hair loss. The data was analyzed from a survey of 68 patients treated with methotrexate at the Department of Dermatology of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow from 2015 to 2018. The results showed that increased hair loss after the beginning of methotrexate administration occurred in 29.4% of the subjects, with the majority (60%) being women. More frequent occurrence of general symptoms was perceived among the patients who reported alopecia. Despite the relatively small size of the studied group, it was concluded that drug-induced hair loss during methotrexate treatment occurs relatively often.
