TLDR Turkish women with female pattern hair loss have lower hair density, and visual counting is more effective than digital image analysis for detecting this.
In 2007, a study was conducted to quantify hair characteristics in Turkish women with female pattern hair loss (FPHL) and compare them with healthy volunteers. The study involved 39 patients with FPHL and 31 healthy volunteers. The results showed that the hair density and anagen hair ratio of the patients were significantly lower than those of the controls. The study also compared visual counting and digital image analysis methods for assessing hair density. It was found that digital image analysis underestimated hair density, especially in cases with higher hair density. Therefore, the study concluded that while diminished hair density is a key sign in diagnosing hair loss, digital image analysis may not be as effective as visual counting in detecting hair density.
