TLDR Men typically shed about 10 hairs in 60 seconds, and this amount doesn't increase with age.
In the 2008 study involving 60 healthy men aged between 20 and 60, researchers found that the average number of hairs shed during a standardized 60-second hair count was 10.2 hairs for men aged 20-40 and 10.3 hairs for men aged 41-60. The study demonstrated low intrapatient variability, with consistent shedding counts over consecutive days and when repeated after 6 months. These results suggest that the often-quoted average of 100 hairs shed per day may not be universally applicable and that shedding does not necessarily increase with age. However, the study's participants were predominantly white men with straight hair, and it was recommended that future research should include a more diverse demographic and those with hair loss conditions.
