TLDR Psoriasis patients' immune response to a hair protein depends on their specific gene type.
The study investigated the role of the keratin 17 (K17) protein, derived from hair follicles, as a potential autoantigen in psoriasis. Researchers synthesized K17 protein and tested its effect on T cell proliferation in patients with different genotypes at the HLA-Cw*06:02 locus. The results showed a significant increase in T cell proliferation in psoriasis patients compared to healthy controls, with the response strongly correlated to the dosage of the HLA-Cw*06:02 allele. This suggested that K17 might act as an autoantigen in psoriasis, and the patient's genotype at this locus was a strong predictor of the immune response.
