TLDR Progesterone byproduct 5αP stimulates mammary tumor growth, but finasteride can suppress it.
The study found that the progesterone metabolite 5α-dihydroprogesterone (5αP) is responsible for the stimulation of mammary tumorigenesis induced by progesterone. This effect can be suppressed by the 5α-reductase inhibitor, finasteride. The findings suggest that targeting 5αP may be a potential therapeutic strategy for breast cancer treatment.
