Progesterone-Induced Spike-Wave Discharges Are Inhibited by Finasteride

TLDR Finasteride blocks progesterone's effect on brain activity linked to epilepsy.
The study found that progesterone increased spike-wave discharges (SWD) in WAG/Rij rats, a model for absence epilepsy, by 54% and 97% at doses of 10 and 20 mg/kg, respectively. This effect was blocked by finasteride, a 5α-reductase inhibitor, suggesting that the increase in SWD was mediated by progesterone's conversion to its neuroactive metabolite, allopregnanolone. Finasteride alone did not affect SWD, indicating its specific role in inhibiting the progesterone-induced increase.

community Proof that finasteride messes with neurosteroids

      in Research/Science  230 upvotes 1 year ago
Finasteride can impact neurosteroids, potentially causing depression and other side effects in some users. Despite these concerns, many continue using it for hair loss, with some switching to topical applications to mitigate side effects.

community Trying to understand finasteride side effects and post finasteride syndrome

      in Finasteride/Dutasteride  72 upvotes 5 years ago
The conversation discusses the side effects of finasteride, including low libido and erectile dysfunction, and the possibility of these effects being permanent, known as post-finasteride syndrome (PFS). Some users report personal experiences with PFS and debate whether the condition is real, with varying opinions on the reversibility of side effects and the role of individual biology.

community Finasteride does deplete important nuero-active steroids

      in Research/Science  9 upvotes 2 years ago
Finasteride can reduce neuroactive steroids, causing side effects like depression, anxiety, and sexual dysfunction. Some users experience persistent symptoms after stopping finasteride, while others use alternative treatments like topical solutions.

      community how about progesterone cream?

      in Research/Science  21 upvotes 1 year ago
Progesterone cream might help with hair loss by inhibiting DHT production and suppressing prolactin, which can increase DHT. Some dermatologists have used progesterone for hair loss treatment, and it has been effective, sometimes combined with minoxidil, finasteride, and hydrocortisone.

community DHT and 5AR respect post, it's importance within the brain

      in Research/Science  111 upvotes 1 year ago
The conversation discusses whether to use finasteride for hair loss, considering its role in inhibiting DHT and 5AR, which can affect brain function and mood. Some users report anxiety and depression from finasteride, while others do not experience these side effects and emphasize the importance of DHT for brain and prostate health.
