TLDR Mannosylerythritol lipids are good for skin and hair care products.
In the 2013 review, researchers explored the production of mannosylerythritol lipids (MELs) by Pseudozyma yeasts and their potential applications in cosmetics. MELs were recognized for their excellent surface-active properties and ability to benefit skin and hair health. The review covered advancements in microbial screening, structural and functional diversity of MELs, and the identification of genes for MEL biosynthesis. MELs were found to moisturize skin, repair damaged hair, activate skin cells, and provide antioxidant effects. One MEL variant, SurfMellow®, was already in commercial use as a cosmetic ingredient. The document provided a detailed overview of MEL research and their promising role in biotechnology and cosmetics.
