TLDR PCOS affects nearly 25% of female medical and dental students, impacting their academic and social lives.
The study reviewed the prevalence and impact of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) among 2,206 female medical and dental students, finding a pooled prevalence of 24.7%. PCOS symptoms, including BMI abnormalities, abnormal hair growth, and acne, significantly affected students' academic and social lives. Many students had a family history of related conditions like diabetes and hypertension. The study emphasizes the need for medical educators and policymakers to address these challenges by incorporating lifestyle changes and support measures into the medical education curriculum to ensure an inclusive and supportive environment for female students.
