TLDR Polymenorrhoea should be included in PCOS diagnostic criteria due to similar metabolic issues.
This study investigates the metabolic implications of polymenorrhoea and partial PCOS phenotypes in a cohort of 6,463 women with PCOS-like characteristics and 3,142 healthy controls. It found that 5,174 women met the Rotterdam criteria for PCOS, while 737 were classified as Pre-PCOS. Common features included oligomenorrhoea, hirsutism, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. Women with PCOS, hyperandrogenism (HA), and oligo-amenorrhoea (OA) had higher BMI, plasma glucose, and lipid levels compared to those with polycystic ovarian morphology (PCOM) and healthy controls. The polymenorrhoea subgroup showed similar metabolic dysfunctions to the oligomenorrhoea group, suggesting the need to include polymenorrhoea in PCOS diagnostic criteria.
