TLDR Most dermatologists think post-finasteride syndrome is rare, possibly psychiatric, and needs more research.
This study surveyed 54 dermatologists from the Spanish Hair and Nail Disorders Group to assess their perception of post-finasteride syndrome (PFS). The results showed that 83.3% of respondents had never encountered PFS in their practice, and 98.1% believed it has a psychiatric origin. Most dermatologists thought adverse effects of 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors are reversible after discontinuation. While sexual dysfunction was possibly linked to 5-ARIs, cognitive impairment, anxiety, and depression were largely considered unrelated. Consensus was reached on 13 of 15 items, with 90.7% agreeing that scientific evidence on PFS is poor and 85.1% identifying young men with pre-existing anxiety or depression as a specific patient profile. The conclusion highlights the need for high-quality studies to guide diagnosis and management of PFS.
