TLDR Natural treatments like saw palmetto and pumpkin seed oil may help with hair loss, but more research is needed.
This review discusses the potential of phytotherapy as an alternative or adjunct treatment for androgenetic alopecia (AGA), which is primarily influenced by dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It highlights natural DHT blockers such as saw palmetto, pygeum, beta-sitosterol, and others, which work through mechanisms like 5-alpha-reductase inhibition and anti-inflammatory pathways. Clinical evidence is strongest for saw palmetto, pumpkin seed oil, and EGCG, while other agents show promise but require more research. Most natural DHT blockers are well tolerated, though caution is advised with licorice and flaxseed. The review emphasizes the need for standardized formulations and larger clinical trials to validate these findings.
