TLDR Hibiscus has medicinal benefits but can be toxic in high doses and is unsafe for pregnant women and infants.
Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, or China rose, is rich in bioactive compounds like flavonoids and anthocyanins, and has been traditionally used for its medicinal properties. It exhibits antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound-healing effects, and shows potential in treating conditions such as diabetes, ulcers, and bacterial infections. While generally safe at recommended dosages, high doses (1600 mg/kg) can be toxic, causing 20% mortality, and it has abortifacient properties, making it unsuitable for pregnant women and infants. More research is needed to develop medicinal formulations, although some extracts are already used in conventional therapies.
