TLDR Phenylalanine may help with depression but can cause issues if not properly processed.
The study reviewed the antidepressant potential of phenylalanine, an amino acid found in food and supplements, using data from major scientific databases. It concluded that phenylalanine exhibited significant antidepressant activities in both in-vitro and in-vivo models, suggesting its potential as a candidate for clinical antidepressant trials. Additionally, the study noted that a deficiency in phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) could lead to intolerance to dietary phenylalanine and result in various syndromes, including severe cognitive impairments.
