Peperomia Pellucida's Ingredients, Antioxidant Properties, and Safe Usage as Food and Herbal Medicine

Chau Thanh Tuan, Trần Thanh Mến
Peperomia pellucida has been studied for its antioxidant properties and safety as a food and herbal medicine. The plant is rich in antioxidants such as polyphenols, tannins, flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, and terpenoids, with significant phenolic and flavonoid contents. It demonstrated antioxidative properties by nearly doubling the lifespan of Drosophila under oxidative stress. Toxicity tests on mice showed no acute or chronic toxicity, with no adverse effects on body or liver weight, hematological parameters, or liver and kidney function, even at high doses. These findings suggest that P. pellucida is safe for consumption and has potential for use in functional foods and pharmaceuticals.
