TLDR PCOS negatively affects women's quality of life, especially if not detected early.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder affecting women from adolescence to pre-partum, characterized by symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, anovulation, acne, hirsutism, and oligomenorrhea. The pathophysiology involves ovarian abnormalities, endocrine alterations, and metabolic modifiers like insulin resistance and chronic inflammation, leading to hormone imbalances and ovarian cysts. Diagnosis is based on the Rotterdam criteria, including menstrual irregularities, ultrasound, and hormone level assessments. Treatments include oral contraceptives, metformin, laser hair removal, hormone replacement therapy, and lifestyle changes. Early diagnosis can improve quality of life and reduce risks of cardiac issues, hair loss, infertility, and uterine cancer.
