TLDR The new omeprazole nanoemulgel shows promise as a topical treatment for infections.
The study investigated the potential of repurposing omeprazole, typically used for stomach ulcers, as an antimicrobial agent by developing a chitosan-coated omeprazole-loaded nanoemulgel. This formulation was characterized by its particle size, zeta potential, and drug content, demonstrating high entrapment efficiency and stability. The nanoemulgel showed enhanced antibacterial activity with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 1.25 mg/mL against bacterial strains, attributed to its ability to disrupt bacterial membranes. In vitro and ex vivo analyses confirmed effective drug release and skin permeation, suggesting its potential for transdermal drug delivery and antimicrobial applications. Further in vivo studies were recommended to explore its effectiveness as a topical treatment for microbial infections.
