TLDR Norplant implants lower some androgen levels but don't significantly change sexual function.
The study evaluated the effects of Norplant levonorgestrel implants on androgen levels and female sexual function in 10 women, with a mean age of 24.8 years. After 2 months, Norplant significantly lowered SHBG levels and decreased DHT and androstenedione, but did not significantly change total or free testosterone levels. Androgen bioactivity, as measured by 3AG levels and hair shaft diameters, was unaffected. No significant change in sexual function was observed, although there was a trend toward worsening sexual desire. Further research was suggested to explore these effects.
