TLDR NGAL may help maintain skin balance and is linked to skin disorders and cancers.
The study identified neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) as a gene induced by calcium in keratinocyte differentiation. NGAL expression was significantly increased in vitro during calcium-induced differentiation, as shown by RT-PCR, Western blot, and ELISA. However, NGAL was not detected in normal skin tissue, except in hair follicles, suggesting differences between in vitro and in vivo conditions. Notably, NGAL expression was elevated in psoriasis-like inflammatory disorders and certain skin cancers, indicating a potential link to epidermal hyperplasia. These findings suggested that NGAL might play a crucial role in maintaining skin homeostasis.

Hair loss has slowed, but uneven growth and kinking persist despite using keto/nizoral shampoo and clotrimazole. Stress and anxiety might be contributing factors.

Increased Malassezia and Cutibacterium in the scalp microbiome are linked to higher sebum production and inflammation in androgenetic alopecia (AGA). Treatments include ciclopirox shampoo, benzoyl peroxide shampoo, clobetasol propionate, calcipotriol, minoxidil, finasteride, and dutasteride.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
