A New Self-Reported Measure of Disease Severity of Scalp Hair Loss in Alopecia Areata

TLDR The new measure helps understand the personal and emotional impact of hair loss in alopecia areata patients.
The document discussed the development of a new patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) called the Scalp Hair Assessment PRO™ for assessing disease severity in alopecia areata (AA). This measure was developed through cognitive interviews with 45 patients in the USA and focuses on the quantity of hair loss, allowing patients to rate their hair loss on a five-point scale based on the percentage of scalp surface with missing hair. Patients considered having 20% or less missing hair as a treatment success. The new PROM was noted for its simplicity and low patient burden, making it suitable for clinical and research settings. However, its brevity was seen as a limitation since it does not address other symptoms like itch or pain. Further evaluation of its psychometric performance was needed.
