In a study from 2017, researchers investigated a new scalp treatment aimed at anti-aging for hair. They screened multiple botanical extracts and identified one with anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties that also reduced UVB-induced DNA fragmentation and increased repair in keratinocytes. This extract was particularly effective at reducing the activation of a stress sensor in human hair follicle melanocytes. To evaluate the anti-aging potential of this extract, an in vivo study was conducted over six months, monitoring hair graying, hair growth, and fiber mechanical properties on hair neo-fibers. The results showed that untreated hair became whiter by 5%, hair loss increased by 13%, and there were changes in the break extension and post-yield gradient of hair fibers. However, the treatment with the selected ingredient stabilized hair loss, preserved natural hair pigmentation, and maintained hair strength. The study concluded that protecting the scalp can have perceivable benefits on hair structure and function, but a long-term clinical study is necessary to evaluate these effects on new hair fibers.
