Engineering a New Mouse Model for Vitiligo

    Prashiela Manga, Seth J. Orlow
TLDR A new mouse model for vitiligo helps study immune responses and potential treatments.
Harris et al. developed a new mouse model for vitiligo by overexpressing a mutant form of Kit ligand and using melanocyte-targeting CD8+ T cells, which mimicked human vitiligo by causing depigmentation in specific areas while hair remained pigmented. The study showed that blocking IFN-γ reduced CD8+ T-cell accumulation and depigmentation, suggesting a potential therapeutic approach for vitiligo. However, the model's utility in testing repigmentation strategies might be limited due to pro-survival signals from KITL and MITF. This model was particularly useful for developing immunomodulatory therapies for vitiligo, despite not providing insights into the onset of the condition.
