TLDR Nanoliposomes loaded with saw palmetto extract could be good for treating hair loss.
Three years ago, a study was conducted on the development of nanoliposomes loaded with a carbon dioxide (CO2) extract of saw palmetto, a substance reported to be useful for treating hair loss due to its inhibition of the 5α-reductase enzyme. This enzyme is responsible for converting testosterone to a potent androgen, 5α-dihydrotestosterone. The study found that these nanoliposomes, which are particularly useful for dermatological use, were small in size (mean size of 145±5 nm), homogeneously dispersed (polydispersity index ≤0.27), and negatively charged (mean value −36.2±3.1 mV). The vesicles were loaded with 0.1% w/v saw palmetto CO2 extract. The results suggested that these developed nanoliposomes could be suitable drug delivery systems for treating hair loss.
