Application of Multiphoton Microscopy in Dermatological Studies: A Mini-Review

    The 2014 mini-review discussed the application of multiphoton microscopy in dermatological studies, emphasizing its advantages for high-resolution imaging of skin structures and processes, and its potential in diagnosing skin cancers like melanoma and basal cell carcinoma. The technology allows for visualization of cellular layers and biochemical state quantification through endogenous contrast from skin components such as collagen and melanin. It has been used to study skin cancer, aging, regeneration, and the transdermal transport of substances, with studies demonstrating its ability to distinguish between normal, precancerous, and cancerous tissues. The review also noted the use of multiphoton microscopy in observing wound healing, scarring, and stem cell behavior in hair follicles, which could be relevant to hair loss and alopecia research. Despite its promise, the review acknowledged challenges such as photodamage, the need for further development for deeper imaging, and the necessity of more clinical trials to establish its clinical utility. The document concluded that with continued advancements and overcoming clinical, regulatory, and economic challenges, multiphoton microscopy could become a routine tool in patient care.
