TLDR The FUE technique can effectively restore moustaches in patients with cleft lips and alopecia, with few complications.
In 2018, a study was conducted on eight adult male patients with repaired bilateral cleft lips suffering from alopecia in the prolabium. The patients underwent moustache restoration using the follicular unit extraction (FUE) technique. The results showed that 70-100 grafts were typically needed for aesthetically pleasing results. No postoperative complications were observed, but two patients experienced graft failure of 50%-60%, requiring a second procedure. The study concluded that the FUE technique can successfully treat prolabial alopecia with minimal invasiveness, less morbidity, virtually no scarring, and simpler technique compared to the follicular unit transplantation (FUT) technique.
