Modern Evaluation Methods for Hair Loss and Alopecia in Women

    Nuwayhid, Rima
TLDR Chemotherapy causes temporary hair loss in women, while Tamoxifen does not significantly affect hair, and genetics show no link between female pattern hair loss and common baldness genes.
The study evaluated hair loss in 34 female breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or tamoxifen treatment, using modern trichological methods. Chemotherapy-induced alopecia (CIA) led to a significant decrease in anagen hair rate and hair density, reaching a minimum after 6 weeks, but these parameters returned to baseline or higher 3 months post-therapy. In contrast, tamoxifen did not significantly affect hair growth. Trichodynia (TD) was more prevalent and intense in chemotherapy patients, with 87% experiencing scalp pruritus, compared to lower rates in tamoxifen patients. Additionally, a genetic analysis involving 585 FPHL patients and 679 controls found no significant association between four AGA susceptibility loci and FPHL.
