TLDR Smaller mesoporous nanoparticles can improve the effectiveness of topical drugs by penetrating skin furrows.
The study investigated the potential of mesoporous silica particles as carriers for topical drug delivery, focusing on their accumulation in skin furrows and hair follicles. Using multiphoton microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Franz cell diffusion technology, researchers found that smaller particles (400-600 nm) penetrated furrows to depths of about 25 µm, even after rinsing, while larger particles (7 µm) remained more superficial. This suggested that appropriately sized porous particles could enhance the bioavailability of topical formulations, highlighting the underexplored potential of skin furrows in drug delivery.
