Mesalazine in the Treatment of Extensive Alopecia Areata: A New Therapeutic Option?

Ana Elisa Kiszewski, Mariele Bevilaqua, Luna Karolina Neves de Abreu
TLDR Mesalazine may help treat extensive alopecia areata effectively.
The study retrospectively analyzed five pediatric patients (aged 2–17 years) with extensive and refractory alopecia areata treated with mesalazine, with or without oral prednisolone and topical betamethasone/minoxidil. All patients experienced complete hair regrowth without abnormal lab results or drug side effects. The findings suggested that mesalazine could be an effective adjunctive therapy for severe alopecia areata, potentially reducing the need for prolonged oral corticosteroid use and minimizing relapses. However, controlled studies were recommended to confirm these results.
