TLDR Epidermal stem cells use integrin β1 and α6 as markers and CD271+ cells help maintain skin health and heal wounds.
The study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the maintenance of human interfollicular epidermal stem cells and their niche. It was found that epidermal stem cells, which are the origin of keratinocytes, highly expressed integrin β1 and α6, making them useful markers for these cells. Additionally, previous research indicated that CD271+ cells in the basal layer around dermal papillae played a significant role in maintaining epidermal homeostasis and aiding wound healing. The study explored various stem cell niche components to better understand these maintenance mechanisms.
