TLDR Lower hair zinc levels may be linked to Neural Tube Defects.
This study investigated the association between zinc levels and Neural Tube Defects (NTD) by analyzing serum and scalp hair zinc levels in 80 newborns with NTD and their mothers, compared to 80 control pairs. The results showed that both the affected babies and their mothers had significantly lower hair zinc levels than the controls (P<0.001). The findings suggested a potential link between decreased hair zinc levels and NTD, indicating the need for larger population-based studies to confirm this association and explore whether zinc supplementation could reduce NTD incidence.
