TLDR The hair dye formulations tested did not cause long-term toxicity or cancer in mice.
Three oxidation hair dye formulations, containing chemical intermediates such as p-phenylenediamine and 2,4-toluenediamine, were tested on 100 mice for 18 months to assess long-term toxicity and carcinogenicity. Despite previous findings that 2,4-toluenediamine could cause malignant hepatomas in rats, this study found no evidence of systemic toxicity or carcinogenicity from the hair dye formulations.
