TLDR Rat hair follicle stem cells can be used to improve blood vessel growth in engineered skin.
The study aimed to enhance vascularization in tissue-engineered skin by transfecting rat hair follicle stem cells (rHFSCs) with vascular endothelial growth factor-165 (VEGF165) using lentivirus vectors. rHFSCs were isolated from 1-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats and successfully transfected with VEGF165, achieving a transfection rate of 85.8±1.9% after 2 weeks. The transfected cells expressed high levels of VEGF165 mRNA and protein, indicating that rHFSCs could be an ideal cell source for developing tissue-engineered hair follicles, vessels, and skin due to their high purity and good proliferative capacity.
