TLDR Rat hair follicle stem cells can be used to improve blood vessel growth in engineered skin.
The study investigated the use of rat hair follicle stem cells (rHFSCs) transfected with VEGF165 via lentivirus vectors to enhance vascularization in tissue-engineered skin. The rHFSCs were isolated from 1-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats and achieved a high transfection rate of 85.8±1.9%, expressing significant levels of VEGF165 mRNA and protein. This indicated that rHFSCs could be a promising cell source for developing tissue-engineered hair follicles, vessels, and skin, addressing the challenge of poor vascularization in tissue-engineered skin.
