TLDR Chaga mushrooms contain compounds that may promote hair growth better than common treatments.
The study examined the impact of lanostane-type triterpenes from Chaga mushrooms on human follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPCs) to evaluate their hair growth-promoting potential. Five triterpenes were isolated, including lanosterol, inotodiol, and trametenolic acid, which showed stronger proproliferative effects on HFDPCs than minoxidil, a common hair growth treatment. These compounds did not inhibit testosterone 5α-reductase or the androgen receptor, suggesting they work differently from some existing alopecia treatments. Ongoing research was looking into how these triterpenes affect gene expression related to the hair growth cycle. The study was supported by JSPS KAKENHI and SVENSON Co., Ltd.
