TLDR Sugar molecule helps hair growth, less in balding, returns with treatment.
This study from 31 years ago found that the L-fucose moiety, a sugar molecule, is expressed on keratinocytes in terminal hair follicles but is decreased in vellus and indeterminate follicles of androgenetic alopecia. However, drug-induced hair regrowth resulted in the re-expression of the L-fucose moiety. The study suggests that the L-fucose moiety may play a role in hair growth and could be a potential target for hair loss treatments.
