TLDR Women with regular menstrual cycles and PCOS have linked kisspeptin and LH hormone patterns, unlike those with irregular cycles.
The study, involving 71 patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), investigated the relationship between kisspeptin and luteinizing hormone (LH) pulsatile releases. It was found that while all PCOS patients had pulsatile secretions of LH and kisspeptin, only eumenorrheic PCOS patients (with menstrual cycles less than 45 days) showed temporal coupling between the secretory peaks of these hormones. Oligomenorrheic PCOS patients (with menstrual cycles greater than 45 days) did not exhibit this coupling and had higher kisspeptin serum concentrations and pulse frequencies. The study suggests that the lack of temporal coupling in oligomenorrheic patients may indicate a more advanced stage of PCOS, with neuroendocrine impairments affecting the regulation of GnRH discharge by kisspeptin, potentially influencing LH secretion.
