TLDR Skin cells release substances important for healing and fighting infection, and understanding these could improve skin disorder treatments.
The systematic review analyzed 100 references and identified 80 different secretions from keratinocytes, the predominant cell type in the skin's outermost layer. These secretions, mainly cytokines, growth factors, and antimicrobial peptides, play a crucial role in skin regeneration and stem cell differentiation into keratinocytes. The most frequently mentioned secretion was Interleukin (IL) 8, found in 39 studies, followed by IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor, each found in 15 studies. These cytokines establish the appropriate inflammatory condition to combat infection and enhance cell differentiation and wound healing. The review also emphasized the need for further investigation to characterize these secretions and evaluate their regenerative capacities. The study suggests that further characterization of keratinocyte secretions could lead to the development of effective treatments for skin disorders and wound repair.
