The study from August 2018 focused on the development and testing of keratin-based particles for hair care. These particles, created using keratin and silk fibroin through high-pressure homogenization, were found to significantly improve the mechanical properties and thermal stability of both virgin and over-bleached Asian hair. The particles increased the stiffness and tensile strength of hair by up to 41.85% and 36.14%, respectively, and also enhanced the alpha-helix denaturation enthalpy, indicating better thermal protection. Additionally, the particles improved hair surface smoothness, as confirmed by a subjective assessment with 30 volunteers. The safety of the particles was verified using human skin keratinocytes, showing no significant cytotoxicity and some pro-proliferative effects. The study concluded that keratin-based particles are safe and effective for use in hair care products, with potential for further development to include fragrances and bioactive molecules for multifunctional solutions.
