TLDR Isoallopregnanolone may be a safe and effective treatment for reducing tics in a mouse model of Tourette syndrome.
The study conducted four experiments on D1CT-7 mice, a model for Tourette syndrome (TS), to assess the effects of isoallopregnanolone (isoAP) on tic-like behaviors. Administered subcutaneously at doses of 5-10 mg/kg, isoAP significantly reduced tic-like behaviors and prepulse inhibition (PPI) deficits induced by stress, without the side effects associated with treatments like haloperidol and finasteride. The group sizes for the experiments ranged from 7 to 8 mice. The findings suggest that isoAP could be a safe and effective treatment for TS, with potential applications for other conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and trichotillomania. However, further research is needed to confirm these results in other models and in both juvenile and female mice.
