TLDR Iontophoresis greatly improves skin absorption of certain substances, especially in hairy mice.
The study demonstrated that iontophoresis significantly enhanced the delivery of magnesium ascorbyl 2-phosphate (APMg) and sodium fluorescein (NaF) into both hairless and hairy mouse skin, with a more pronounced effect in hairy skin. This suggested that hair follicles played a crucial role in the process, as the transfollicular pathway offered lower resistance to electric currents compared to the transdermal pathway. The findings indicated that iontophoresis could be an effective method for increasing drug delivery into hair follicles, although further research was needed to explore its application on the scalp.
