TLDR Early diagnosis and treatment of iodine deficiency in buffalo calves is crucial for their healthy growth.
The study reports on the diagnosis and treatment of iodine deficiency in a one-month-old female buffalo calf, which presented with inappetence and generalized alopecia. Diagnostic tests revealed low levels of triiodothyronine and thyroxine, indicating impaired thyroid function. The calf was treated with oral levo-thyroxine at a dosage of 20 mcg/kg for one month, resulting in marked clinical improvement. This case underscores the importance of early diagnosis and management of iodine deficiency to ensure optimal growth and development in young calves, as iodine is crucial for thyroid function and overall health.
