TLDR The skin protects the body, helps heal wounds, stores energy, and supports health.
The integumentary system, primarily composed of the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis, serves multiple critical functions. The epidermis, with its keratinocyte layers, acts as a barrier against environmental threats and plays a role in immune defense through cells like Langerhans cells. It also maintains moisture homeostasis and hosts a complex microbiome. The dermis, rich in collagen, provides structural strength and supports wound healing with its vascular network. The hypodermis, mainly adipose tissue, cushions the skin and acts as an energy reserve. Additionally, skin adnexa, such as sweat glands and hair follicles, contribute to protection and physiological responses.
