TLDR Porcine PRP can replace FBS and promote hair growth.
This study aimed to optimize the production of porcine platelet-rich plasma (PRP) as a potential replacement for fetal bovine serum (FBS) and to evaluate its effects on human hair follicle dermal papilla cells (HFDPCs). The researchers developed a protocol for large-scale production of porcine PRP, which was activated using collagen, thrombin, and calcium chloride. The study found that porcine PRP had higher growth factor levels than FBS and remained stable during freeze-drying and surfactant treatments. However, HFDPCs treated with porcine PRP showed no significant difference in proliferation compared to those treated with FBS. The study concluded that porcine PRP could be a commercially viable alternative to FBS and a promoter of hair growth.

Someone's brother tried Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for hair loss; it had minimal effect on hair but improved skin appearance. Microneedling at home was suggested as a more sustainable alternative.
