TLDR Porcine PRP can replace FBS and may promote hair growth.
The study aimed to optimize the production of porcine Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) as a replacement for Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) and to evaluate its potential in promoting hair growth by stimulating Human Follicle Dermal Papilla Cells (HFDPC). The researchers developed a method to produce large amounts of porcine PRP, which showed higher growth factor levels than FBS, with increases from 21% to 400%, and maintained stability under freeze-drying and surfactant treatments. Although HFDPC treated with porcine PRP did not show significant differences in proliferation compared to FBS, the study confirmed the commercial viability of porcine PRP as an FBS substitute and a potential hair growth promoter.
