TLDR Higher IL-15 levels are linked to more severe hair loss in alopecia areata.
The study reviewed the role of Interleukin-15 (IL-15) in alopecia areata (AA), an autoimmune condition causing hair loss. It found that IL-15 levels were significantly higher in AA patients compared to controls and increased with the severity of hair loss. In mouse models, blocking IL-15 and related pathways prevented disease progression. Despite these findings, the study concluded that there were insufficient studies to determine the therapeutic potential of targeting IL-15 in treating AA.
