TLDR Thermoresponsive nanogels show promise for delivering medicine through the skin but need more safety testing and regulatory approval before clinical use.
The document from 2019 explored the potential of thermoresponsive nanogels (tNGs) to enhance the delivery of therapeutics through the skin. It noted that tNGs are promising due to their ability to control the release of drugs in response to temperature changes and to penetrate the skin with minimal damage to its natural barrier. While tNGs have shown effectiveness in delivering drugs and proteins for potential applications such as skin disease treatment and wound healing, their clinical use is hindered by the lack of comprehensive toxicology assessments and the limitations of current skin models in research. The authors concluded that future research should focus on developing tNGs for delivering complex molecules to specific cells and on meeting regulatory guidelines to transition from research to clinical practice.
