TLDR Intramuscular triamcinolone acetonide is an effective treatment for severe alopecia areata, especially in males.
The study evaluated the efficacy and safety of intramuscular triamcinolone acetonide (i.m. TAC) as a rescue therapy for refractory alopecia areata (AA) in 27 patients. The treatment showed a 63% response rate, with all patients exhibiting inactive disease post-treatment. Hair regrowth was inversely related to initial scalp involvement. Adverse effects were limited to female patients, including dysmenorrhea and osteoporosis. The study concluded that i.m. TAC could be a valuable option for managing active hair loss and promoting hair regrowth in refractory AA, particularly in male patients.
